Troy is one of the leaders in the firearms accessories inductry, they offer quality, great designs, and their products greatly improve the functionality of many platforms.
The Battlemag is, in my opionion, an attempt to cut into Magpul's domination of the poly magazine market. Does this magazine really do that? Or, better yet, does it offer anything revolutionary that makes it a viable alternative? The build of these magazines is impressive, the follower is surely anti-tilt, the body of the magazine is light yet flexible if nothing else, the spring is strong, and texture on the exterior actually offers an improved grip over the PMAGs.
The Battlemags made it into the mix for my recent range test, I picked up a 3-pack a couple years ago when they were first released and never really studied them to a worthwhile degree. It was nice to run these against the PMAG GEN M3 and HK Poly Mag directly. In the SIG556, the magazine has some slight play in the front-back department, putting it in the same category as the PMAG - not fitting as well as the HK Poly Mag. The loading of the magazine is easy, very easy and no issues. locking and shooting with the magazine - no issues at all. I didn't do a crush test, but I've seen reviews where 5.56x45 NATO rounds have been shot through the magazine and it continues to function.
My ultimate take on the Troy is that it has potential, it clearly has a unique design and what seems to be a lighter composite poly than other magazines. Since these are about 2-3 years on the market, Troy may want to do a slight re-design addressing issues from the numerous torture tests and reviews, offer a dust cover, and a link option, as well as a 20 round model if they want to stay with the effort to cut into Magpul's market share. If nothing else, keep to the sub-$20 price point and offer some new colors, or translucent options.
Serpent Tactical will look for any new updates or offerings from Troy Industries and we'll jump in line to try anything new if it's offered. They hold up, they function well, and they offer an alternative to the market. Serpent Tactical LLC may look at carrying these in the near future.
