Keeping true to their defense-oriented business model, our friends at Heckler & Koch are releasing the VP9 ‘Tactical’ in the coming days of August. While the VP9 Tactical adds yet another handgun to the impressive Heckler & Koch lineup, this variant of the VP9 represents the first threaded barrel striker handgun from the company to date. Given the overwhelming success of the VP9 over the past couple of years, it’s no surprise that Heckler & Koch would outfit the VP9 with these options and appeal the VP9 to those with ‘tactical’ demands.
While companies like SilencerCo have offered a threaded barrel for the VP9 for some time now, there is no doubting the quality and assurances that one will get with a Heckler & Koch barrel. Those who have invested in a silencer for their VP9 using a SilencerCo barrel will probably have to invest in a few more parts and pieces to gain utility from the VP9 Tactical as the SilencerCo barrel is threaded for 1/2 x 28. Heckler & Koch’s polygonal barrels are thoroughly tested and made of cannon grade steel, quite possibly the best handgun barrels on the market. Heckler & Koch recently offered a factory threaded barrel for the P30. While the P30 and VP9 are similar in many aspects, they do not share standard or threaded barrels. Assumption is that the barrel will be threaded to 13.5x1 left hand, based on the fact that the USP9 and P30 factory threaded barrels are threaded to these specifications. Lastly, the thread protector is included.
The VP9 Tactical provides more than a threaded barrel at first glance with ‘TACTICAL’ engraved into the slide and the addition of night sights.
The VP9 Tactical is equipped with Meprolight Tru-Dot night sights, a worthy upgrade for those who demand sharp visibility of sights when operating or shooting in low-light conditions.
Are there Unknowns?
Until Heckler & Koch does a press release on the VP9 Tactical and puts forth the changes included in the ‘tactical’ variant, we assume we’ve covered the upgrades. There are no visible changes to the ergonomics, magazine capacity looks to be standard at 15+1 and it’s doubtful that Heckler & Koch has done anything to the already impressive VP9 trigger. All things considered we may expect to see a VP40 ‘Tactical’ on the horizon. Also, with the release of the VP9 in Flat Dark Earth (FDE) this too may be a reality.
